Next Call of Duty Snapchat Tease #1 – ‘Listen only to the sound of my voice’

Earlier on, we released an article speculating a new change found in a recent playlist update to Black Ops 2 where mysterious Snapchat QR codes were found on in-game advertisements within certain maps. If users followed the QR code, it would take them to the official Call of Duty Snapchat page where they would be able to follow the account. Everyone’s immediate thought was that this was the start of a viral marketing campaign for the next Call of Duty, and now we know that is 100% true!

Just hours later, the first teaser for the next Call of Duty appeared on the aforementioned Snapchat account. The teaser show’s a man’s eye closing, a forest and a snow setting, while a man’s voiceover says ‘Listen only to the sound of my voice’. As with most viral campaigns, the clip doesn’t reveal an awful lot but simply gets our mind’s racing about what we can expect.

So what do you think the clip means? Personally, I get the feeling that the character shown is visiting a psychiatrist of some sort who is either getting the character to remember a time in their past or to visit a ‘happy’ place in order to deal with some post-traumatic distress. If the game is Black Ops 3, as rumoured, could this be David Mason, the protagonist of the previous game? Maybe this teaser hints at the game having some sort of flashback? The first two games in the Black Ops series both centered on characters telling a story from the past. In Black Ops 1, Alex Mason is interrogated to find out what he knows about ‘the numbers’, while in Black Ops 2 his son David visit Frank Woods as a way to find how to locate Raul Menendez. As for the clips, they may tease in-game footage/locations, or in true viral marketing fashion could have been created solely for this teaser. Who knows, but it certainly has our minds thinking and excited for more!

Activision and Treyarch have been known to do viral marketing campaigns to build up hype for the announcement of their next game. In the past, viral campaigns have followed a similar timescale where they surface at the beginning of April ahead of the game’s reveal at the end of the month or beginning of May. Snapchats disappear after a very short time, so let’s hope eagle-eyed members of the community spot future teasers before they’re gone forever!

Check out the first teaser below. Stay tuned in the coming days, weeks and months for more on this year’s Call of Duty title.
