YouTube to Implement Offline Viewing Mode in iOS App This November

Video sharing service YouTube has announced on its blog for creators and partners that it will be updating its mobile apps for iOS and Android with an offline viewing mode, stating that users will be allowed to add videos to their devices to watch for a “short period when an internet connection is unavailable”.

YouTube says that the feature will be implemented in November and will be a part of many updates planned for YouTube viewing on mobile devices.

This upcoming feature will allow people to add videos to their device to watch for a short period when an Internet connection is unavailable. So your fans’ ability to enjoy your videos no longer has to be interrupted by something as commonplace as a morning commute. […]

Check out the YouTube blog when this launches in November for more details on how this will work for viewers.

This might seem great for viewers or people that are limited on internet connection. I can see people using this that don’t have internet or want to have things to view while traveling, all great things to be honest but what about the YouTuber? Let’s say a Tips and Tricks video by Tmartn is downloaded, god knows that the person would probably watch it multiple times when the forgot a step or an area in the video. Let’s say they download it on their device, for some odd reason have internet via wired but not wifi. They check the video out 8-10 times in a day to accomplish something in the video but the device is offline and views are not counted towards the view count. Will this hurt YT’ers? I know a lot of channels depend on repeatability or need.  Tips and tricks, workout videos, and more all benefit by giving the viewer something to replay the video at a later time, will people use this to avoid having to watch an ad or go to the hassle of looking for the video?

Personally, be ideal for the app to keep count of the views and have them update once device is put back online, but what about ads? Maybe to download a video you have to watch a lengthy ad? Or maybe somehow have YouTubers have this blocked on their channels? Thoughts?
