Voice commands, facial recognition confirmed for PS4 camera

Though it was unveiled back in February along with the rest of the system, the details surrounding the PlayStation 4’s Eye camera have remained relatively scarce. However Sony has now officially confirmed that the camera enables both voice and facial recognition functionality:

“Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm that PlayStation Camera allows for voice recognition and we will look forward to sharing more details in the lead up to the launch of PlayStation 4 on November 29 (Europe).”

Additionally, a user video taken from the GameStop Expo 2013 in Las Vegas shows an official description of the camera that reads “From navigational voice commands to facial recognition, the PlayStation Camera adds incredible innovation to your gaming.”

It is unclear to what extent the camera will be used in games or interface control, or whether it is meant to directly compete with Kinect 2.0, but at least we finally have some hard facts and it’ll be interesting to see how Sony decides to implement the device. A Sony Computer Entertainment spokesperson reassured that more details will be shared “in the lead up to the launch of the PlayStation 4.”

The PlayStation 4 Eye camera will launch alongside the PS4 on Nov. 15th for $59 in North America and €49 in Europe seperately.

Are you excited for the PS4 Eye? Do you think opting to not include the camera with every PS4 will hurt developer support (as with Kinect 1.0)? What games would you like to see utilize the camera? Let me know below in the comments!

it might hurt developer support, since the user base will be fragmented, but i think that not including the camera was a more solid choice on sony’s part.

Yeah it’s a really tough situation, on one hand by not standardizing the amount of PS4 Eyes there is the possibility for it to hurt the camera’s potential. But on the other hand by ensuring they are a full $100 below the Xbox One at launch is most likely to have a far greater positive impact. And the recent preorder numbers appear to prove that.

Clever marketing is what they need, allow people to demo it at places like Best Buy and Toys R US. I used to work at Toys R Is and they demoed the PS Move for a bit. It never really got off like the Kinect. Though the Eye looks more appealing that the move controllers.
