Sony explains why the new PS Vita’s screen is LCD

The recently announced PS Vita “slim” has been highly praised by the press and gamers alike, however one concern raised has been the curious decision to replace the OLED display from the current model with an LCD as the former is superior technology. Now Sony’s PlayStation Group chief executive Andrew House has shared some of their reasoning behind the decision:

The main reason is that the LCD panel can now realize an image quality as high as that of the OLED panel.

He goes on to say that by switching to an LCD screen it’s enabled them to reduce the thickness of the new Vita by 20%.

Here’s a side-by-side (or is it top-by-bottom?) comparison of the new Vita (below) and old Vita (above):

Judging by this image alone the colors do appear more vibrant and the blacks more dark with the current OLED Vita (as is the normal when comparing OLED to LCD). But it’s one thing to compare them next to each other, it’s unlikely that the average person will notice any reduction in quality compared to the “old” Vita, and I’m guessing gamers will gladly make this small trade-off for a noticeably thinner and lighter device.

But what about you? Does this influence your decision to buy the new Vita at all? Share your thoughts below in the comments!

from what i have been hearing the OLED screen has it’s own problems. One problem I heard about was screen burni young or ghosting which was very hard to get rid of, the others where bad screen glare when used in very bright conditions, artifacts like noise lines – static lines sometimes seen during game play as looking hazey or slightly blury. I’m sure LCD screens have their own problems that make them not very favorable but if you think about LCD screen are becoming better and better everyday. Plus besides im sure all of you reading this are using an LCD screen, so does it really matter?.. I say NO because as far as I know a PSP VITA or PSP VITA SLIM will never be as good as playing a console or gaming computer on kick a@@ TV or PC screen.
