Rumor: Sources say PS4 has a “significant” performance advantage over Xbox One

According to an EDGE report citing “multiple high-level game development sources”, the PlayStation 4 possesses a “significant” performance advantage over the Xbox One.

In the article, contacts have told EDGE that “memory reads on PS4 are 40-50 percent quicker than Xbox One, and its ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) is around 50 per cent faster.” and “a platform-agnostic development build can run at around 30FPS in 1920×1080 on PS4, but it’ll run at “20-something” FPS in 1600×900 on Xbox One.”

Another important note from the report concerns the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One graphics drivers. A source said Microsoft “has been late on their drivers and that has been hurting them” while another flat out-told them they are “horrible”.

Regardless of this apparent performance discrepancy it’s unlikely that gamers will notice any major differences in multi-platform titles for the two next-gen consoles. Furthermore it remains to be seen whether developers will feel comfortable with creating a multi-platform game that is superior on one of the two systems. Developers are still at the earliest stages of harnessing the power of next-gen hardware and there are still opportunities for the Xbox One to close the gap. Only time will tell if PlayStation exclusives from premiere studios such as Naughty Dog or Quantic Dream will end up being markedly better than competing Xbox IPs.
