Rumor: Sony announcing PS4 virtual reality headset at TGS 2013

CVG is reporting that Sony is set to reveal a new virtual reality headset accessory for the PS4 at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show on Sept. 19th.

According to the source, the technology was initially planned to be revealed at Gamescom, “but plans fell through at the eleventh hour.”

It is speculated that Evolution Studios intends utilize the PlayStation-branded display for DriveClub to simulate a cockpit view.

But don’t count on the head-mounted display to be included with the PlayStation 4. The peripheral will be sold separately (ala the PS4 Eye camera) to keep the console’s cost below the Xbox One.

What are your thoughts? Is virtual reality the next big thing or just another gimmick ala 3d gaming? The Oculus Rift has begun to take off, with major funding recently being secured and the likes of John Carmack joining the company. Since 4k gaming support looks unlikely in the near future, is this the next-generation display that will fill its place?

This could be neat (although Sony should just partner with the Oculus Rift guys somehow).

I’m not completely sold on VR gaming just yet. People who’ve tried Oculus Rift have raved about it, and I’m sure it’s crazy immersive, but will it work for someone like myself (wears glasses, prone to motion sickness)?

Yeah it seems like a partnership between the two companies would be mutually beneficial, we’ll see if that’s the case.

Looking forward to trying a VR display sometime soon so I can form my own judgment as well.
