Report: Early PlayStation 4 owners reporting hardware failure & console locks

The PlayStation 4 is upon us! With that being said, early reports from customers who managed to obtain Sony’s latest console early have already been rolling in reporting hardware failure.

The first report came in from NEOGaf users “Dylx,” who claimed simply updating the console caused the light bar to turn white while subsequently “bricking” the console:

After playing a brief game of NBA 2k14 I quit and inserted my battlefield 4 disk. The system prompted for an update, so while watching the progress bar (Around 20%) my controller light turned from blue to white. Hasn’t worked since…

Get those extended warranties ready! and SCEA on speed dial!

**UPDATE**
Went thru a number of “fixes” with customer service and none of them worked. They are shipping me a box to get the unit serviced.
Safe Mode on the console no longer works.

**UPDATE** 2

For shits and giggles, swapped the hard drive for a fresh one, that also didn’t work.

Not to be left out, users from other areas of the internet have also popped up having similar problems. Reddit user “Arogon” has expressed the same type of issues with his Taco Bell supplied unit:

Hey guys!!
I just got the PS4!! I plan on starting to stream extremely soon!! Please, ask me as many questions as you want and I will do my best to answer them!! Fell free to ask them here or message me. Also you can reach me and ask questions on twitter.com/arogon or http://instagram.com/arogon1416
The stream will be on twitch.tv/arogon1416

EDIT1: Sooo I can’t get the PS4 to work… Definitely feels like I got shipped a broken version… I am investigating the issue 🙁

EDIT2: Sony is refusing support since console hasn’t launched.

EDIT3: Making a new YouTube video explaining my struggle. if you offered a sugggestion and I haven’t responded, this video will explain why.

EDIT5: Engaging ultimate support request mode. At 3:45 I’ll start calling Sony again and try to get this shit fixed. I’ll be livestreaming it?? Idk I’m honestly pissed/bored at this point. Hopefully things will work out for me.

EDIT6: Right away they told me consoles not released, please call back Friday…

If that wasn’t bad enough, another Reddit user by the name of “YearsofLove” also reported a similar issue from his Taco Bell supplied PlayStation 4:

So I also had a faukty ps4 shipped to me this morning, when I realized that it wasnt working I called support and this is that account.

I was first connected to a girl called Lauren, she was very nice and helpful and took me through a normal troubleshooting process, when none of that worked she created a full support ticket and said I would receive a call back.

About an hour later I got a call from a guy called Joe concerning my support ticket. He also took me through some troubleshooting before taking me that my console would have to be shipped in for support. He offered to expedite the whole process as much as he could, and apologized profusely for the mistake.

So overall it is a disappointing day, but I’m at least glad I got good support from the people at Sony, and that it is being handled as quick as possible.

TL:DR broken ps4 was handled by Sony in a quick, yet still disappointing manner.

Now clearly these are pre-launch consoles that could potentially suffer from a lack of proper software updates. It could also just simply be bad luck as all hardware does yield some form of failure rate. That being said, it’s still a grim look into the negative’s surrounding new hardware launch, negatives that more users will undoubtably experience in the coming weeks.
