Rainbow 6: Patriots being “remade”

Rainbow 6: Patriots was announced two years ago, but it’s remained elusive ever since. Rumors as to its fate began to circulate though earlier this year Ubisoft did confirm that Rainbow 6 was still in development, and it would be heading to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In a new interview, Ubisoft’s North American president Laurent Detoc reconfirmed this, and when asked why Ubisoft hasn’t said much about Patriots and how switching to new hardware has been beneficial, Detoc noted:

We had a core team. They had a good vision. They got started, and then the game wasn’t working. So [they had] to start again. There’s an editorial group in Ubisoft, a big group, very influential. If the game is not good enough, they say it’s not good enough. Most of the time, the team will say, ‘yeah, I know.’ But sometimes they want to continue in a direction where you say, ‘no, it’s not going to work. Rainbow had to be remade. Now they’re going to have the benefit of the new consoles, if and when it comes out. It’s one of those examples where you try, it doesn’t work, you try again. If it doesn’t work, we’re not going to bring it to you.

Detoc also said the following regarding the possibility that Rainbow 6 may drop its Patriots subtitle:

Could it become a shooter with another name in the end, because the team doesn’t want to do counter-terrorist guys? Say they want to be in a mercenary setting? That’s possible.

Patriots certainly made a lot of buzz when it was first unveiled, and I know many including myself have been eagerly awaiting further details on this next Tom Clancy game. While it’s disappointing to hear of delays and restarts, it’s good to know developers and publishers are willing to go back to the drawingboard until they meet the standards they hope to achieve. Better to release “when it’s done” ala iD Software (who has similar development setbacks with their upcoming Doom 4) than suffering the alternate outcomes.
