PlayStation 4 production cost significantly lower than PlayStation 3

Sony has seemed to be riding the trail to success ever since they released their next generation PlayStation 4 earlier last week. Selling over a million units at launch, to say consumer reception is good is an understatement. What seems to be the “fall back into grace” story of the decade, it looks like Sony can simply do no wrong with the PlayStation 4.

Reports this morning seem to validate this claim on an investors level as well, given we now know Sony is in the green on production costs of the PlayStation 4 by an ever so slight $18. Costing Sony $381 to produce the a PlayStation 4 console, the number is a far and away improvement from the overhead costs of the PlayStation 3.

Just how much of an improvement? Sony allegedly lost $241.35 on every PlayStation 3 game console sold at $599 and $306.85 on every console with a smaller hard drive at $499 back in 2006. Thats right, it cost Sony $806.85 to $841.35 in order to produce the PlayStation 3 at launch.

Wrapping your head around these overhead numbers from 2006 in comparison to today shows first hand the mentality change at Sony. Let use know what you think!
