Lionsgate teams up with Major League Gaming and Twitch

Lionsgate, a Hollywood studio behind many major blockbusters, has announced that it will team up with Major League Gaming and live-streaming Internet channel Twitch to hold a special tournament, as part of a promotion for the upcoming DVD/Blu-Ray release of the movie Ender’s Game.

Dubbed the “Ender’s Game on Blu-Ray Tournament,” this event will offer up $20,000 in prize money through a StarCraft II invitational competition, which kicks off this Wednesday. The grand prize winner will take home $10,000 from the tournament.

Since the film has some gaming themes in common with MLG – with a singular “special” child trying to direct victory for his army – it seems like an ideal promotion.

“The skills used to develop battle leaders in Ender’s Game are drawn from real-world gaming, especially the types of skills used by premier tournament level players,” said Lionsgate executive vice president of marketing Anne Parducci. “We are excited to partner with Major League Gaming and Twitch, both leaders in the e-sports world, to present this unprecedented movie tie-in aimed directly at those who take gaming seriously.”

Lionsgate is hoping the movie gets a boost from said promotion, as it only grossed $61 in the U.S. box office back in November. The movie will arrive on DVD and Blu-Ray on February 11th.
