League of Legends Joins the MLG Pro Circuit

Press Release by MLG:

“Once in a great while, a game comes along that is a perfect fit for the Major League Gaming Pro Circuit. We look for games that are exceptional: games that promise a consistently high level of competitive play, games that fans love to watch, games with the potential to be part of people’s lives for years to come. And now, we’ve found our newest game.

We are incredibly excited to announce that, starting at MLG Raleigh, MLG will be partnering with Riot Games to bring you League of Legends (LoL) on the Pro Circuit. LoL made a huge splash on the competitive scene with its debut in 2010, and it has been casting its spell over an ever-growing community of talented players and dedicated fans ever since. We are honored to welcome LoL to the MLG family, and we can’t wait to watch it in action as an official Pro Circuit title.

The Details

Because we’re adding LoL midway through the 2011 Season, we’ll be starting small, but in style. We’re inviting four of the best teams in North America, and, with the support of Riot Games, we’ll be covering their travel costs. Matches will be played during the Saturday and Sunday of MLG Raleigh, and we will be streaming them live.

  • The teams: Epik Gaming, Curse Gaming, Team Solo Mid, and Counter Logic Gaming
  • The format: 5v5, Bo3 Pool Play. The Top 2 teams will play an extended series Bo7 for the Championship
  • · The prizes:$20,000 is on the line
    • $12,500 for the 1st Place team
    • $7,500 for 2nd Place
  • The schedule (in ET):
    • Saturday 10:00AM – 8:00PM    Streamed Pool Play Matches
    • Sunday    10:00AM – 1:45PM    Streamed Championship Finals

League of Legends joins an already stacked Pro Circuit lineup that consists of StarCraft 2, Halo: Reach, and Call of Duty: Black Ops. There’s never been a more exciting time for competitive gaming. How much further will it go, and how much better will it get? Choose your runes, start working on your last hits, and come to Raleigh to see for yourself.”

Thoughts on another PC game being added to the MLG line-up? What are your thoughts on this? Will this generate a lot of players and support or not go far? Any other games you think should be added?  Leave your thoughts below.
