EA wants to do for Star Wars what Arkham Asylum did for Batman

Electronic Arts is hoping to make jaws drop with its upcoming Star Wars games, beginning with the recently announced next-generation Star Wars: Battlefront game, in development at Battlefield studio DICE.

“The most important thing for me is that we take the Star Wars license and come up with games where people’s jaws drop,” EA Games vice president Patrick Soderlund told Polygon. “We need to do with this what [Batman: Arkham Asylum] did for the Batman license.”

Soderlund wouldn’t go into details on the new Star Wars: Battlefront game, saying, “It’s going to take a while.” He did, however, confirm that the speeder and AT-AT shown in the game’s teaser trailer will be featured in the full game “for sure.”

The executive also said DICE is poring over past Star Wars games to make the new Battlefront title, including the controversial Star Wars: Battlefront III.

“We didn’t toss anything out,” Soderlund said. “We’re looking at the old games. We have access to everything that was done during the LucasArts era. But we do want to take our own stance.”

DICE’s new Star Wars: Battlefront game is one of multiple Star Wars titles EA currently has in development as part of its exclusive deal with brand owner Disney. Dead Space studio Visceral Games is also working on an all-new Stars Wars title, though no details are available about this project.

The new Star Wars: Battlefront game is expected to launch in summer 2015 alongside Disney’s upcoming Star Wars films.
