Sony Teases PC Character Transfer On Planetside 2

Sony is exploring the prospect of letting Planetside 2 players transfer their character builds between the PS4 and PC versions of the game. Although Planetside 2 players will not be able to play against each other in cross-platform style, Sony developers are working on a solution to link up the two versions of the popular free-to-play shooter. It’s all in working out kinks in the servers due to the fact that PS4 users will be behind in updates.

Creative director of Planetside 2, Matt Higby in an interview w/ Eurogamer stated that
“Because of the update cadence, and the additional steps you have to go through to be able to release an update on the PlayStation network, we’re not going to be able to keep our servers in sync, so you won’t be able to just play with the same people,” Higby explained.

“They might be a week behind in terms of patching, or a day behind or whatever it ends up being, and we can’t really have that.

“But we’re also talking about having character portability, so a PC character, you could transfer it to PlayStation 4, and then back. The character format’s the same on both, it’s just purely a matter of the server updates.”

Planetside 2 was released on PC in November of 2012 and has been heavily updated since its release. I like to think of it as Halo and Battlefield all in the same game. It has stunning graphics and surprising action-packed gameplay. Hopefully Sony and the developers of Planetside 2 can work it out so that players can still enjoy their characters while playing with their friends on separate systems.
