BBC working on Grand Theft Auto-based drama for ‘Make it Digital’ initiative

UK broadcaster the BBC have announced they have plans to make a TV drama based on the Grand Theft Auto series.

Not much is known about the drama production yet, but sources have indicated to IGN that it will look at Sam and Dan Houser, the co-founders of Rockstar Games, and the work that led to the development of one of the game industry’s biggest franchises. Rockstar has become well known for its secrecy, and the Houser brothers in particular generally avoid being seen in the public eye, so it’s a production that we’re certainly intrigued by.

The Grand Theft Auto drama is part of a wider ‘Make it Digital’ scheme in development by the BBC. Through this scheme, the BBC will be aiming to avoid a skills shortage problem by helping the UK to further push digital towards young people. One million Micro Bits (mini-computers) will be given to 11-year-olds around the country and coding-based programmes and activities will also be launched. A documentary based on Bletchley Park, a key communications intelligence facility during World War II, is also in the works.

“This is exactly what the BBC is all about – bringing the industry together on an unprecedented scale and making a difference to millions. Just as we did with the BBC Micro in the 1980s, we want to inspire the digital visionaries of the future. Only the BBC can bring partners together to attempt something this ambitious, this important to Britain’s future on the world stage.” – Tony Hall, BBC Director-General
