Unreal Engine 4 – Free for registered developers

Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 has been a dominant third party development platform for the better half of a decade. With countless titles under it’s belt, it was the go-to foundation for quite some time.

The transition into the 8th generation of console platforms have seen a pendulum shift, however. With more development studios creating their own in-house engines plus other entries into the arena from competitors such as Crytek, Epic’s Unreal Engine has taken a back seat as of late.

Now in it’s fourth iteration, things may be changing for Epic’s Unreal Engine 4, as they have announced some pretty stout news for anyone looking to get into the development fray by offering direct access to Unreal Engine 4’s source code:

All Unreal Engine subscribers who are registered Xbox developers or registered PlayStation developers (including members of the ID@Xbox indie program) can receive access to UE4’s complete source code for their respective console platforms, at no extra cost.

This is important during a time of rising development costs while the industry as a whole is in constriction. What are your thoughts on Epic’s Unreal Engine 4? Do you think they will be able to have similar dominance as previous generations?
