Black Ops 3 Campaign missions unlocked from the get-go, new screenshots and more

Gamescom is officially beginning to roll up which means some new press previews and interviews are starting to surface. First is Black Ops 3 with GamesRadar having gone and posted two separate preview articles with some interesting new info (1, 2).

First of all, we already know that Black Ops 3’s campaign mode will support co-operative play, allowing for up to four players to hop online together into the story mode. Treyarch have built the new campaign to heavily support co-op and the latest intel is more proof of that. Rather than having to unlock each campaign mission in order, players will be able to access them from the get-go, according to GamesRadar. This means that if one player gets the game a few weeks later than the rest of their friends, they will still be able to join a match together on any mission. It’s not clear whether this also applies to playing solo or if it’s just for co-op. It’s a small detail, but a nice convenience. On top of that, players will be able share their weapons with others in co-op. So if one player has unlocked a weapon that another hasn’t, the one who hasn’t unlocked it can still use it.

Focussing on the more in-depth article, complete with screenshots (check below!), provides us with some more insight into the game’s campaign levels. According to Jason Blundell, a lead at Treyarch on Campaign and Zombies, the Black Ops 3 story is the “most fucked up story” he’s worked on. One of the levels takes place in Singapore and features heavy winds and floods due to a change in the world’s weather patterns caused by a terrorist group called ‘541i’ which infiltrated a CIA blacksite. One of the weapons used by GamesRadar is that of a Spike Launcher which shoots spiked cannon balls, crushing enemies or exploding them via a detonation. Cyber Cores are selected in a menu and activated by using R1 and L1 (on PlayStation 4), with potential actions including hacking robots to fight alongside players or having a robot run towards enemies followed by detonating. As for the Safe House, which is the new Campaign co-op lobby, players can change their loadouts and appearance, show off their achievements, practice scenarios together with a training sim, and build their own weapons by trading in currency earned during matches.

Stay tuned tomorrow at 10am PDT (1pm EDT/6pm BST) for new Black Ops 3 multiplayer news when Treyarch host a eSports themed live-stream.
