Third party headsets not fully functional with PS4 at launch, bluetooths SOL

An unfortunate bit of news has come to surface regarding how the PlayStation 4 will function with headsets upon launch. Essentially all third-party (and some Sony) headsets will not work completely at the console’s launch:

Funtional audio and chat:

  • Included PS4 headset

Functional audio only, chat later with system update:

  • Sony-branded headsets
  • Sony PULSE headsets
  • Most third-party headsets (Astro, Turtle Beach, etc.)

Non-functional:

  • Bluetooth-reliant headsets

This is certainly a big dissapointment for the large number of people who have invested in a quality headset–myself included. Being unable to record footage with a capture card at launch is somethink most can deal with, however this is likely to be more difficult. Hopefully we won’t have to have our PS4 headsets ductaped to our Astros too long before the update which will enable third-party chat.

The Xbox One is in a similar situation due to the new proprietary connector on the controller. Microsoft will be releasing an adapter which will support legacy devices.

Are you upset by this news? Would you buy a new headset if it offered chat-capability at launch? Share your thoughts below in the comments!
