Microsoft is going at length to provide a number of useful benefits to Xbox One developers including dedicated servers, cloud processing, and storage.
These services are available for free without any hidden costs or strings attached. So long as a developer is making a multiplayer Xbox One title, dedicated servers can be utilized.
According to Microsoft director of Xbox product planning Albert Penello:
One of the benefits of publishing games on Xbox One. ALL game developers get Dedicated Servers, Cloud Processing, and ‘storage’ (for save games) free. If you want to do dedicated servers on other platforms, you have to prop them yourself. But on Xbox One, while developers can choose to use their own methods, we make it available to everyone.
We all know how lag can ruin online gaming, so Microsoft’s attempt to usher in the next step in online connection quality is more than welcome. If Sony doesn’t offer something comparable, this may give the Xbox One a noticeable edge when it comes to multiplayer gaming. As for the benefits of the cloud, Forza Motorsport 5 is already implementing it in creative ways and its range of uses are yet to be fully explored. There’s a lot going for Xbox One development it appears.
