Metal Gear Solid’s iconic exclamation alert almost left out of MGSV

Metal Gear Solid V – as well as Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes – almost lost one of the series’ most-recognizable aspects. Originally, Hideo Kojima considered ditching the exclamation point.

Kojima told Famitsu:

I actually considered not including the ‘!’ mark that appears when enemies discover you. The staff said, ‘if you get rid of it, it’ll cause an uproar!’ Considering the console specs, it would have been possible to substitute with facial expressions and gestures. But when the character visuals are that realistic, you need to have a certain element of ‘ambiguity.’

According to Kojima, the team plans to include the legendary cardboard box which was also on the chopping block for a time.

After the mixed response to recasting the voice of Solid Snake it’s a good thing Kojima didn’t make any more huge changes to game. Metal Gear Solid is hardly a franchise aimed at being realistic by any means, so moving suddenly in that direction for MGSV would have felt very odd to most fans.

Are you relieved to hear that at least a few of the series’ staples are safe? Do you actually want MGS to be less “out-there” and more grounded in realism? Share your thoughts below in the comments!
