Far Cry 4 rumors surface: Code named “Omega,” features on-line co-op and companion modes

Far Cry 3 was one of last holiday seasons biggest surprises. Giving players a massive tropical world to explore while battling one of gaming’s greatest (although under used) villains in recent years, Far Cry 3 did a great deal of work to advance the series popularity.

With that said, the pre-E3 hype season is coming up and rumors and speculation of Ubisoft’s next installment within the Far Cry series are starting to trickle out. Although no official title or screenshots have been made available (yet), a source close to the project managed to share some information about the direction the franchise is taking:

Far Cry 4 is coming on strong. Currently code named Omega (nothing to do with Blood Dragon, funny enough). Open world with RPG elements mixed in. Will have coop and an online companion too.

Although not too surprising regarding the open world and RPG elements, the idea of a co-op Far Cry game is something that was seriously missed and a often requested feature from both Far Cry 3 and the off shoot (and fantastic) Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

As for the on-line companion, this is something that seems to be becoming a staple in all Ubisoft titles, offering potential web based applications, side-missions and group activities as seen in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and other upcoming Ubisoft titles.

As for the code name, it could go two ways. The literal definition of “Omega” means “Great;” something that could simply signify how the developers view the title as of right now (wouldn’t be surprising). Looking more into it, one could also make the connection to the “Alpha and Omega” metaphor, with Omega referring to the “last” in a series. Given the success of Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon; it’s doubtful that would be the case.

As always, these revelations about Far Cry 4 are simply rumors at this point, so take them with a grain of salt. In the mean time, let us know what you think about these potential features!
