Comcast and EA Partnership officially announced for “Xfinity Games”

Today, Comcast and EA announced a partnership in the form of “Xfinity Games powered by EA,” a new streaming gaming platform for the cable giant’s X1 set-top box, currently installed in 5 million homes according to the latest numbers. The service is aimed specifically at “families that want to play games on the TV and that’s casual gamers,”

The beta will be launched today, and will include 20 games, most of which, but not all, from EA. So while the focus looks to be on EA titles you may see other titles in the service.

Some of the current games include:

Real Racing 2
EA SPORTS FIFA Soccer 13
MONOPOLY
NBA Jam on Fire Edition
EA SPORTS PGA TOUR Golf
Plants VS. Zombies
Peggle Nights
Word Whomp Underground
World of Goo

If you currently have Comcasts Xfinity service and are interested in the beta go to http://www.xfinity.com/xfinitygames and hit the Sign Up button. While the beta starts today, users won’t all be admitted instantly.

My take on Xfinity Games is, it could be helpful depending on how they try to market it. The general thought is it will be another subscription on top of what you already pay for Cable, internet and so on but it could be worth it for families who do casual gaming together on a weekend as there are some decent titles on the platform. There is a market for this and it’s likely a lot of the people who still pay for TV service as well versus those who just use their computer and Netflix and similar services to get their fix on shows.
